CHARLOTTE, NC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Burke County man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting police officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

According to court documents, Peck entered the Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, 2021, via the West Front. Documents say Peck used a flagpole to strike a Metropolitan Police Department officer. The alleged attack was captured on a body camera. Peck later sprayed another officer with an orange substance and grabbed another by the collar as the officer struggled to breathe. During the attack, body camera footage captured multiple rioters shouting, “He can’t breathe!” and “Let him go!”

Gregory Charles Peck, Jr., 51, of Connelly Springs was charged with two felonies: assaulting, resisting or obstructing officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon and disturbing the peace.

In addition to the crimes, Peck was also charged with several offenses, including:

  • Entering and remaining in prohibited areas or buildings

  • Unlawful and disruptive behavior on prohibited premises or in prohibited buildings

  • Using physical violence in prohibited areas or buildings

  • Disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or on its grounds

  • Using physical force on Capitol grounds or buildings with a deadly or dangerous weapon

In the 43 months since the riots, more than 1,488 people in nearly all 50 states have been charged with crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol. Nearly 550 people have been charged with assaulting or obstructing law enforcement.

The investigation is still ongoing.
