PGA Tour fans criticize Matt Kuchar after shocking decision to return to 18th hole Monday

PGA Tour fans laughed their heads off Matt Kuchar after choosing to be the only player not to complete his final round at the Wyndham Championship on sunday evening.

The 46-year-old Kuchar decided not to play his second shot on the par-4 18th hole in the final group because of darkness, even though his playing partners Max Greyserman and Chad Ramey completed the hole.

The call means the nine-time PGA Tour winner must return Monday morning to finish the 18th hole.

This also means that a number of tournament officials, volunteers and event staff will have to return especially for him on Monday.

Kuchar’s decision to return Monday was made even more baffling when he was left out in the cold. T12 and, regardless of the score on the schedule, could not even qualify for next week’s FedEx Cup Playoffs.

All he needed to do was win the Wyndham Championship to advance to next week’s FedEx St Jude Championship.

A bogey on the 18th hole could cost Kuchar about $58,000.

Small change for a man about to slip past the cash register $60 million mark in PGA Tour revenue.

Kuchar told Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis after leaving the 18th hole that he made the decision because he felt the match should have been stopped on the 16th green two holes ago.

“We were so far past the point where we should have stopped playing,” Kuchar said.

“We saw what Max did on hole 16, they should have blown the trumpet right away.

“I feel bad, that poor boy should have won this tournament.

“If I don’t play, I can show Max that he can make an important move.”

Kuchar was referring to the fact that Greyserman needed four putts from 40 feet on the 16th hole, which resulted in a double bogey and took away the lead.

That came two holes after Greyserman made a disastrous quadruple-bogey eight that cost him his four-stroke lead over Aaron Rai.

In another bizarre incident, Kuchar sloppily hit his tee shot on the par-4 18th hole while the penultimate group was still ahead on the fairway.

Fortunately, Kuchar made a mistake on the tee shot, otherwise Rai, Cameron Young and Billy Horschel and their caddies would have risked being hit by his golf ball.

Kuchar apparently thought the fairway was clear, but it wasn’t.

He took his turn far to the left, into the trees.

When he got there, he immediately marked his ball and told a PGA Tour official that he had no desire to finish the hole.

Kuchar had the right to make that decision, because by the time they turned on the 18th, the horn had already been blown.

But Kuchar’s playing partners Greyserman and Ramey decided to persevere and finish it off.

Greyserman made a par to finish solo second, while Ramey made a bogey to finish far back in T52.

Kuchar has been slammed by golf fans and media

Englishman Rai claimed his first PGA Tour title with a two-stroke victory over Greyserman, who miraculously gave away a four-stroke lead with five holes to go.

Kuchar’s decision to return Monday to play his final round stunned and astonished almost everyone, including the CBS Sports commentators.

As a result of Kuchar’s decision, he will only player who returns on Monday morning to finish his round.

CBS anchor Jim Nantz couldn’t help but say, “I don’t expect we’ll be able to give you that coverage tomorrow.”
