An old tweet in which Elon Musk casts doubt on Trump’s suitability for the White House is making the rounds on social media, with many pointing to the Tesla CEO’s apparent about-face in his support for the former president.

“I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat and sail off into the sunset,” Musk wrote on X in July 2022 and then on Twitter.

His post was in response to a video of Trump at a rally in Alaska, posted by Breitbart, in which the former president accused Musk of falsely denying that he had ever voted for a Republican candidate and called the billionaire “another bulls*** artist.”

Musk followed up his tweet with another one criticizing Trump’s age.

“Trump would be 82 years old at the end of his term, which is too old to be president of anything, let alone the United States of America,” he wrote, before saying that Trump’s then-challenger for the Republican nomination, Ron DeSantis, would “easily win” over Biden.

The comments have resurfaced following a conversation between the two, which took place on Musk’s X platform on Monday evening.

The two-hour interview initially struggled with technical issues, which Musk blamed on a “massive (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.”

Toward the end of their conversation, Musk brandished his “moderate, somewhat” credentials, telling listeners he was not a “hardened, long-term Republican,” and then implored “moderates” to support the former president’s reelection campaign.

“I think you should support Donald Trump for president. And I think it’s actually a very important crossroads. And we’re in big trouble if it goes the other way,” Musk said.

During one of their last exchanges, he added: “I think we’re at a crossroads in the path of the destiny of civilization. I think we have to take the right path. And I think you are the right path.”

Monday’s interview wasn’t the first time the Tesla executive has voiced support for the former president.

On July 13, a few hours after the attempted assassination at a rally in Pennsylvania, Musk posted footage of Trump raising his fist in the air as he was escorted off stage by Secret Service agents. The video was captioned, “I fully support President Trump and pray for his speedy recovery.”

However, the apparent discrepancy between Musk’s 2022 statements and his renewed embrace of Trump has already been highlighted by many on social media.

One major account that brought the tweet to attention was Kamala HQ, the “official rapid response page” of Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

The account posted Musk’s tweet while the Trump interview was underway, but edited to remove the comments about Ron DeSantis. It read: “Interesting.”

Musk has also invited Harris for a conversation on the X Spaces platform, but the vice president has not yet responded.
