After a solid preseason debut, New York Giants rookie running back Tyrone Tracy suffered an apparent leg injury during practice Tuesday.

Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com noted that Tracy was transported with his leg in a pneumatic cast after falling during a kickoff.

According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Tracy initially missed the kickoff and his right leg appeared to buckle as he bent over to retrieve the ball.

Tracy was selected in the fifth round by the Giants in the 2024 draft. He had the best season of his college career in 2023 at Purdue with 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 11 games.

In addition to his work as a running back for the Boilermakers, Tracy was one of the best special teams players in the country. He ranked 16th in the FBS in kickoff return yards (25.5) among players with at least 16 returns.

Before converting to running back when he transferred to Purdue in December 2021, Tyrone played wide receiver for four years at Iowa.

Tracy made his first appearance for the Giants in a 14-3 preseason win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday. He finished with 26 rushing yards on five carries.

The Giants listed Tracy as their third running back, behind Devin Singletary and Eric Gray, on their unofficial depth chart released before the game against Detroit.

Head coach Brian Daboll is working with a largely new running backs group this season. Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida are no longer with the team. Singletary was signed as a free agent in March to be the starter.

Tracy could have had a chance to break into the rotation in the regular season with a good preseason. His injury is clouding things for now, but we’ll have to wait for an official diagnosis to know when he’ll be able to return to the field.
