In a very short time, Hulu has ordered a series Mid-century modernthe multi-camera comedy pilot of Will & Grace creators David Kohan & Max Mutchnick and Ryan Murphy, starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham and Linda Lavin.

Filming will take place less than two months after the pilot, written by Kohan and Mutchnick, was officially greenlit and just four weeks after it wrapped filming live in front of an audience directed by multi-cam icon James Burrows.

The quick decision-making — especially by Disney standards — isn’t all that surprising. In addition to an A-list creative team in front of and behind the camera, the pilot has had a very strong internal word-of-mouth that has gone into overdrive after the table read.

The series follows three best friends (Lane, Bomer, Graham) — gay men of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years together in Palm Springs, where the wealthiest, Bunny Schneiderman (Lane), lives with his mother, Sybil (Lavin). As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how tough things get, there’s always someone to remind you that you’d be better off if you just got your neck done.

Bomer’s former Mormon Jerry Frank is “pure of heart. He’s also tough of body and soft of mind.” Graham’s Arthur is a dignified, elegant veteran of the fashion industry.

Lane and Bomer serve as executive producers on the series, along with Mutchnick, Kohan, Burrows and Murphy. 20th Television, home to Ryan Murphy Productions, is the studio.

This is a relatively rare multi-camera streaming comedy series. Hulu previously tried the genre with How I Met Your FatherIt also marks the first half-hour series for prolific, Emmy-winning producer Murphy and a return to the genre for the Emmy-winning Will & Grace creators, executive producers and showrunners Kohan & Mutchick recently revived their hit comedy for NBC. Frequent collaborator Burrows served as executive producer/director on both incarnations.
